THE TRIO

THE STEVE LARSON TRIO — with bassist Mark Schneider and drummer Jason Palmer — is a classic jazz piano trio in the tradition of groups led by Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Vince Guaraldi, Ahmad Jamal, Dave Frishberg, Thelonious Monk, and Chick Corea. While the Steve Larson Trio's music includes a wide variety of styles and influences, the result is always melodically based, harmonically inventive, and rhythmically engaging.

MARK SCHNEIDER plays elegantly lyrical and viscerally swinging double bass. His bass playing reflects his broad experience playing a variety of musical styles including jazz, blues, latin, and pop. Many in the Northwest know his wonderful electric bass playing from his decades of work with local ensembles such as the Don Latarski Group. But with the Trio, Mark explores his passion for the double bass — an instrument that gives direct voice to his superb melodic invention, expressive tone, and deep groove. As composer, Schneider also contributes pieces to the Trio's repertoire. JASON PALMER draws a remarkable variety of colors from his drum set, and does so in a way that inevitably hooks listeners rhythmically. A Pacific Northwest treasure, Palmer is equally comfortable in many genres, and may enliven a Trio selection with colorful brush work, a Brazilian dance rhythm, or a funk groove. He has collaborated with Bobby Shew, John Zorn, John Hollenbeck, Marvin Stamm, Dave Pietro, Nancy King, Don Latarski, and others. When not busy performing, Jason teaches drums at the Oregon Festival of American Music and at the University of Oregon.
